Legislation impacting Washington, DC

I am not sure what the Republican end game is with the District of Columbia. They seem hellbent on dismantling it.
You know how Trump has made all sorts of disparaging remarks about DC and has apparently deems it his private fiefdom, with no guardrails? How decisions have been made that bypass longstanding tradition and law?
Something is going on, and damned if I know what it is. MAGA Republicans seem to be undertaking a massive effort to destroy our nation's capital.
If you have sound insight into this matter, please let me know. I don't want to wake up one morning and learn that the White House, the Capitol building, and our precious monuments have been NASCARized, decorated with patches memorializing Trump's cronies.
     Or worse.

Proposed legislation:

  • August 7, 2025 - September 19, 2025:
  • July 17, 2025 - August 22, 2025: Republican: Two bills to hamstring the DC Council; imposition of criminal penalties for camping on public property; Sister City restrictions; prohibit non-citizens from voting (sigh). Democratic and Bipartisan: Remove Francis Newland's name from monument; extend two existing bills that expired in 2025; allow DC to be treated same as other 50 states under Social Security Act. 15 ECs: 14 from the Chairman of the Council of the District of Columbia; 1 from the Executive Director, Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.
