Finding Family

Genealogy research is about far more than adding names to a family tree. When we understand our roots, we also understand why we do the things we do, think how we think, see the world through our unique rose-colored glasses.

Whether we find math whizzes, philanderers, or inventors, there's going to be something that causes an aha! moment.

This section chronicles my personal work, finding my own family roots. We're typical Americans, with roots in Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Sweden. Sachs, Thieme, Light, Norris, Kelly, Heap, Nabors, and even a Trump (although not Trumpf--our Trump hailed from England). Brickmakers, musicians, mathematicians, farmers, writers, mayors, revolutionaries, these people are all part of who I am.

I write about what I am learning. Join me on this journey!

  • Give yourself grace: Give yourself grace. It’s not worth the effort of beating yourself up, of trying to figure out what’s wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you. You’re human. Embrace your humanity.
  • Girls of Taylor: Mixed in with those "oh-really" flashes are also girls whose dreams of Math PhDs and TCU professorships paved the way for this granddaughter of Taylor who studied Mathematics (and German) at TCU.
  • Genealogy as historical research tool: The rabbit hole that was Käthe’s home life? I found its entrance on Ancestry, where Marcel Ohlmeier added anecdotes about Mrs. Katharina Schüddekopf nee Ohlmeier.
