Proposed legislation related to LGBTQIA+ rights: July 18, 2025 - July 25, 2025
H.R.4618 - Jamie Reed Protecting Our Kids from Child Abuse Act. To establish a Federal tort against pediatric gender clinics and other entities pushing gender-transition procedures that cause bodily injury to children or harm the mental health of children.
Introduced July 22, 2025 by Gregory Steube (R-FL). Cosponsored by Mary Miller (R-IL). Referred to Judiciary and Energy and Commerce and Education and Workforce the same day.
Comment: Jamie Reed was a “whistleblower” who made grievous allegations against the gender clinic where she was a case worker (not medically trained). Her claims have since been largely debunked. But that clearly did not keep Gregory Steube and Mary Miller from naming their bill after her. I guess facts don’t matter in Florida.
S.2671 - Reproductive Rights Are Human Rights Act of 2025. To amend the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 to require a section on reproductive rights in the Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices.
Introduced August 1, 2025 by Brian Schatz (D-HI). Cosponsored by sixteen Democrats, no Republicans, and no Independents. Referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations the same day.
Comment: The bill would require the U.S. Department of State’s annual Human Rights Report to include sections not only on reproductive rights, but also on LGBTQ+ rights. It’s a strongly worded piece of legislation, pointing to numerous binding treaties and documents that would require the U.S. to consider reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights as human rights.
