National security, including DHS, ICE, CBP, Secret Service, and Coast Guard

Perhaps I worry too much. But the authority that Republican senators and representative want to cede to the Executive Branch scares me. Seeing legislation that expands the unilateral power of Department of Homeland Security feels like we are watching Star Trek's 'Borg' in action.
The grownups are most certainly not in charge.
Note: ZIP codes are apparently the purview of DHS.
Proposed legislation:
- January 1, 2026 - :
- November 19, 2025 - December 31, 2025:
- September 26, 2025 - November 18, 2025: A great many nominations for national security positions, some apparently rammed through. FALCON Act, requiring quick turnaround to Inspector General queries. Restrictions on licenses and certifications for human traffickers. China. True Shutdown Fairness Act (back pay). Transferring NPS land to DHS. Strengthening DHS oversight. Cybersecurity. DHS involvement in wildfire security.
- July 24, 2025 - September 25, 2025:
- July 22, 2025 – July 23, 2025: Three bills passed the House under suspension of rules. One would make the Coast Guard a Cabinet-level agency. The other two focused on a ton of new ZIP codes. Priorities!
- July 17, 2025 - August 22, 2025: Includes transcript of the hearing to confirm Kristi Noem as Director of Homeland Security. No legislation had 20+ cosponsors. But there's a great deal of horrific GOP legislation, such as giving all remaining unobligated funds from the IRS enforcement account to DHS. And good Democratic legislation, like requiring ICE to wear body cameras. All going nowhere.
