bulletAnalysis of all three White Rose trials by someone well-versed in National Socialist "law" ~ they seem to differ from a legal standpoint, and we would like to know why. Also the "buendische" trials. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletSimilarly: A comparison of the legal "strategies" employed by the various defense counsel. Was any of it legitimate? Was there a noticeable difference between the defense that was actually paid for (e.g. Schmorell's defense counsel) and the court-appointed counsel? SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletStudy of the literature (both secular and religious) that was read by the "members" of the White Rose. This is a vast topic, so no bidding wars are necessary. Each individual had a unique reading list, and the group as a whole was not a "whole" ~ ie, some read certain books together, while other subgroups read different books and lectures. Did what they read make a difference in their individual approaches? Related to the general topic ~ SE:   WP:   BK:   . As individual authors are "spoken for", we will add that information here.
bulletSame for the music they listened to, as well as concerts and theater productions they attended. Music/Concerts ~ SE:   WP:   BK:   . Theater Productions: SE:   WP:   BK:   . Movies: SE:   WP:   BK: SC 2/7/04.
bulletI would love to have an architecture/history major track the changes in Munich, Stuttgart, and Ulm from 1937-1945 (but especially to October 1943). Read blueprints to know exact layouts of major structures (university, Justizpalast, Stadelheim, the Kaserne, the various WR residences in all cities w/ street and house plans) as they knew them. And what changed with the bombings: When neighboring houses were destroyed and to what extent. Anneliese Knoop-Graf once noted that this aspect of White Rose history is the most distorted, because despite best intentions, the survivors can only remember the physical buildings as they have seen them in recent years. This detail has been all but lost. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletIn short, Blumberg. This place affected Sophie deeply. It's where she was suicidal. All three books in my bibliography are in German, and all are... glossed over. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletThe Vollmoeller industries (especially Vollmoeller Mode in Berlin) during the Third Reich. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletEuthanasia/eugenics, in particular researching various family members that White Rose "survivors" have described as sacrificed to this program (is it true or not?). And addressing the work done at the facility in Zwiefalten. This can be two separate projects if there's enough material. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletComparison of the Hitler Youth organizations in Munich, Stuttgart, Ulm, and Saarbruecken. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletWas there any correlation between Nazi pogroms and Jewish holidays (including Shabbat)? Focusing especially on Munich, Ulm, Stuttgart, and Saarbruecken. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletNail down an oft-repeated legend: It is said that during a Hitler speech in Ulm in 1933, someone cut the cables to his microphone, and he vowed not to come back to the city. But Susanne Hirzel notes that he did return to Ulm much later; she does not recall a speech, just an appearance. This is too good to leave dangling. Will it float? SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletThe actual relationship between Harnack and Bonhoeffer resistance groups. They were cousins, but was there really an overlap in their resistance efforts? SE:   WP:   BK: AW 1/18/04.
bulletPolicies regarding private ownership of automobiles from 1938-1945. Believe it or not, this is a "Streitpunkt" in more than one part of the story. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletDetlef Bald missed a perfect chance to render this project moot. He chose to believe Wittenstein's docs without asking questions about authenticity, and blew it. So: We would very much like to see a military analysis of who saw what when. For example, follow Hans Scholl's movements through Belgium, Luxembourg, and France in 1940. Track Willi Graf over his extended assignment with the 252nd. And so on. Help those of us who are not military historians understand the real role that being part of the Wehrmacht had on the individuals in the White Rose. If you are willing to tackle every single person and do the tedious-dusty archives work, this could be a phenomenal project. Read Bald's book first (check it out, don't buy it) to know what not to do. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletLutheran and Catholic church holidays in Bavaria, Wuerttemberg, and the Saarland during the Third Reich. What became of them? Asking because if you compare letters and diaries to actual liturgical calendar (bless databases), some entries are skanky. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletWe will look at other proposals that deal with religion and the White Rose, but know in advance that these stand the least chance of acceptance. The topic's been done to death, and 99% of the time, the author gets it wrong. I would recommend that if you are Catholic, you do Lutheran aspects of WR, and if you are Lutheran, the Catholic aspects. Emotion seems to get in the way of unbiased scholarship when you mix religion and White Rose. If you think YOU can get it right, then query away. SE:   WP:   BK:
bulletI already know that we don't want a book-length version of this. But a white paper would be nice on the role and function of the Studentenkompanie. And either in this paper, or as a companion essay: What were the requirements for promotion to sergeant, and then to the next level? In general, what sort of paperwork had to be filed? If you can find the paperwork that Scholl, Schmorell, Graf, Wittenstein et al filed for their respective promotions, all the better. SE:   WP:
bulletThe RAD camp in Krauchenwies. We got pictures only and interviewed two people onsite. It deserves at least an essay. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletNot everything has to be dreadfully serious. I would love to see research into all the various places they went skiing. Similarly, a paper about the products they call by brand name would be fascinating and un-boring (TM IKEA). SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletPsychology of the White Rose. Profiles of each individual student, what made them "tick", what their strengths and weaknesses were. Note that Scholls will have to wait until censorship is lifted. SE:   WP:   AT 10/01/03. BK: AT 10/01/03.
bulletLilo Fuerst-Ramdohr believes that their political like-mindedness was not actually the decisive factor in the friendships that came to be called the White Rose. She argues that all except Scholls came from extremely dysfunctional families where they could not communicate with parents whom they could not trust [and I contend that Hans and Sophie Scholl did as well ~ Inge just masked it with legend post-war]. ~ This may be a project that will have to be tackled one family at a time, until Scholl archives can be unblocked. But I believe that ultimately, this study will be the key that unlocks the most WR secrets and finally allows us to understand the nature of informed dissent, civil disobedience, and what draws most people to act in unison with a select group of friends. SE:   WP:   BK:   .
bulletThink of something that is not on this list? Talk to us!

We are also looking for a Law Department at any university with a strong emphasis on international law and intellectual property law. The Scholl, Wittenstein, and Mueller censorship of documents borders on criminal. We'd like to talk to a Law School that would not be afraid to take on the German government if necessary to get the archives opened, and failing that, to get them removed to the National Archives of the United States of America or to the library holdings of the university whose law school handled the case.

Because the Ulmer Chronik speaks of unbelievable sums of money that our government paid to Inge Scholl. Her applications for Marshall Funds and related (e.g. John McCloy Funds) need to be reviewed to see if she properly disclosed her Nazi activities as Ringfuehrerin. And the money trail needs to be followed to determine how much went to the Scholl-Archives, with its heavily censored documents.

What's missing? In addition to access to about 90% of Scholl documents, the Hirzel Gestapo interrogation transcripts are blocked. Mueller, Wittenstein, and Inge Scholl transcripts are "missing". De-Nazification files are largely blocked. [NEW! Mueller's have been found, and will be included in the next update!]

And frankly, it is impossible to know the full scope of the White Rose story, who was good and who was NOT, until these documents are released. It is a national disgrace that access is blocked.

[If you learn that any of these documents have recently been released, email me, and I will remove that reference from this page.]
