White Rose History, Volume I: Coming Together (January 31, 1933 to April 30, 1942) ~ The Unfinished Story

History of the White Rose, by Ruth Sachs. From teen years to coalescing of group in Munich.
This compelling volume combines an overview of Hitler's rise to power and increasingly harsh and anti-Semitic measures, with the reactions of the teenagers who later banded together to say NO! Some like Hans and Sophie Scholl enthusiastically embraced the 'fresh new air' of National Socialism, while others like Willi Graf refused to goose-step from the beginning.
Their separate journeys to honor and justice led them to the same place at the same time: The University of Munich, in its darkest hour. Read how they overcame obstacles just to know another was there. How they laughed, danced, and loved, fought, lied, and deceived. They are us, the best of us and the worst of us. Like us, they failed on occasion ~ failed one another and failed themselves. But when it mattered most, they reached down and found the courage of their convictions.
Book is subtitled "The Unfinished Story" as some Gestapo transcripts remain blocked, and Scholl Archives are censored.

Academic version (for scholars and older students) includes footnotes but no illustrations.

Regular edition (for younger readers and casual nonfiction fans) includes illustrations but no footnotes.

Note: Binding is unorthodox - we use three-ring binders for these books, because of the updates that are added to them. You will appreciate the unusual approach the first time you receive and read one of these updates!

The day we announce a hard cover edition of these volumes ~ that's the day you will know that all archives have been thrown wide open and the full story is finally known.

White Rose History, Volume I: Coming Together (The 2003 Update)

Topics covered in the 2003 update include:
*How Traute Lafrenz and Alexander Schmorell became friends;
*The narrative of Hans Scholl's buendische/Hitler Youth trip to Sweden in 1936. He and his band of friends come alive. You will laugh at their languid lakes and sparkling trees, and nod knowingly when Hans tries to show off and nearly wrecks their (stolen) rowboat;
*Additional positive aspects of Hans Scholl's personality as told by former army comrades during the occupation of Paris in 1940;
*More information about Willi Graf's home life as a teenager. You will gain immense respect for this young man as you read how he stood up to family pressure to 'go along', especially since his father helped establish the Nazi party in the Saarland;
*Information about the Nazi paramilitary group Willi briefly joined;
*Sophie Scholl's years as a Hitler Youth leader, including narrative from eyewitnesses who said they feared her for her fanaticism during this period;
*The emphatically thorny issue of Hans Scholl's sexual crimes. Note that the details are covered only in the academic version of this update, since the update to the regular edition may be read by younger students;
*The post-war revisionism practiced by Susanne and Hans Hirzel. Her memoirs VOM JA ZUM NEIN were quite good. Recently, she has adopted a "Hitler did not know" viewpoint; and,
*Information about mentors such as Richard Scheringer and Pfarrer Franz Weiss who have been ignored in most extant White Rose histories.
Please note: The updates to the "regular" edition are free with purchase of Volume I. This product corresponds to White Rose History, Volume I: Coming Together, Academic Version.

White Rose History, Volume III: Fighters to the Very End (October 13, 1943 to May 8, 1945) ~ The Unfinished Story

History of the White Rose, by Ruth Sachs.

The Roses who were not executed did not stop fighting. Two were killed for their continued resistance in 1945. One of those? Christoph Probst's father-in-law, Harald Dohrn. Release date: July 13, 2008.

Note that release date has been pushed back a couple of times. Not for lack of trying, but because of the immense difficulties accessing primary source materials related to this time frame. We've even run into brick walls with our FOIA requests of the U.S. Department of Defense and former INS. Don't worry, we won't give up until we're convinced we've got the WHOLE story.
